CONSETT PARK BOWLING CLUB.START OF NEW SEASON.Although the weather was somewhat bleak and cold on Easter Monday afternoon, nevertheless a large company gathered in Consett Park on the occasion of the re-opening for the season of the bowling green. Amongst those present were:- Couns. E. J. George, R. Alsop, S. Carruthers, J.P., Jos. Surtees, J. Nixon, W. D. Reed, J. W. Surtees, G. Digby, W. R. Redshaw, R. Clough, Major Mangles, Messrs H. P. Robinson, C. E. Oliver, H. H. Wattsford, G. T. Broadbent, W. H. Palliser, Wm. Robinson, Capt. Barrow, J. Siddell, A. Simpson, Jos. Walton, J. T. Symington, B. Jackson, L. Matthews, M. Williamson, T Atkinson, A. Oliver, Jas. Ferguson, J. Gibson, &c.Mr George, in performing the opening ceremony, said it was a great pleasure to Mr. Alsop and himself that the game had been so enthusiastically taken up, and in recognition of that enthusiasm and appreciation they would see behind them a second green in course of construction. (Applause.) He could not promise them a third or fourth green because there were the players of other games to be considered, and they had moved the tennis players higher up. He hoped that they would have a successful season, and he felt from the enthusiasm that had been shown by the players that the season would be more than successful. (Applause.) He was afraid that morning that they were going to have a repetition of the weather that marked the opening of the green, and which was typically called “Consett weather.” (Laughter and applause.) He had great pleasure in declaring the green re-open for play. (Applause.)Mr. Alsop in proposing a vote of thanks to Mr. George for coming to re-open the green, said that it gave one an opportunity of expressing appreciation of the Company’s generosity and kindness in providing that green for the use of the public. (Applause.) They appreciated it all the more because it filled a long-felt want, and he felt sure it had given a great amount of pleasure to many people. (Hear, hear.) The bowling green was now an important factor in the social life of the district. (Applause.) Not only had they derived pleasure from learning the game under the coaching of Major Mangles, but it had afforded them the opportunity of making many additional friends. (Applause.) They now had a membership of 221 and a long waiting list. They did fairly well in their matches last season, and they had a big list for the present season. They were also proud of having provided seats so that their wives could come and admire them play. (Laughter and applause.)Mr Jos. Walton seconded the motion which was endorsed by acclamation.Mr George, in reply, said that he was much obliged to Mr Alsop and Mr Walton for their kind words. Mr Walton had referred to the District Council, and he was sorry that they would not have Mr Walton with them on the Council. There was one consolation that he thought M. Wilson could derive from that  - he could now devote the whole of his leisure time to playing bowls. (Laughter and applause.)A match followed between teams selected by Mr George and Mr Alsop, the former winning by 88 to 42.
