Fourth Annual Report

On 29th October 1926, The Consett Guardian printed the Club's fourth annual report, then on 5th November 1925 reported on the fourth annual meeting.

The committee decided there should be a club blazer, and that "the colour should be navy blue with gold cord binding and a monogram in gold on the breast pocket".

Transcriptions of both articles are below.

CONSETT PARK BOWLING CLUB---------------ANNUAL MEETINGThe following is a copy of the fourth annual report to be presented at the annual meeting to-morrow night:-During the period before the opening of the season when all bowlers had been eagerly looking forward to resuming their favourite recreation, the prospects were very bright but no sooner had we started the season when we were enveloped in the industrial cloud which continued to hang over us all through the season. Yet in spite of the difficulties met with we have had an extremely successful season.  We commenced with our full limit of members and the few vacancies which occurred subsequently were readily taken up by those on the waiting list. The greens were formally opened on the 24th April, when the usual match was played between sides selected by the President of the Chairman. The President’s side was successful, thus reversing last year’s result. We feel sure that it will be the desire of all our members when at this point will record our gratitude for, and our appreciation of, the many privileges granted the club by the Consett Iron Co. We recognise how fortunate we are to be able to obtain such splendid facilities for our game. Under such agreeable conditions it is not surprising to find that the quality of the play has made further improvement and the time is not far distant when we should be able to hold our own against any other club. The competitions have been keenly contested. Many of the ties were close and exciting especially in the finals of the rinks and the pairs. The winner of the Club Championship was Mr. J. W. Lake, our assistant hon. Secretary, to whom we offer our hearty congratulations. He has played consistently well all season and is a worthy holder of the Presidents trophy. The rinks competition for the Chairman’s cup was won by Messrs G. Turnbull, J. W. Grant, P. McCaughley and W. Turnbull, whom we congratulate on their success. They were a good combination and had a sound and consistent skip. The pairs competition for the Vice-Presidents Cup was won by Messrs G. Turnbull and G. Eustace jun, who thoroughly deserved their success in their uphill fight which continued to the last wood of the final tie.It has been very gratifying to notice how well the members turned up to play off the ties in the competitions. Not the slightest problem has been experienced this year in completing them by the stipulated dates, and your committee trust that in future years the same consideration will be shown. The Jumbles Competition continues to be most popular. The number of games was larger this season than last and when it is stated that over 7000 scores were recorded it can be seen that the members enjoy the competition very much. The following were the prize winners:-Prize                                                  Percent.1-      Mr. J. Heatley                        12.212-      Mr. J. Wilkinson                    11.4553-      Mr. R. J. Postle                      11.4544-      Mr. D. Davison                      11.415-      Major A. Mangles                11.40Satisfactory number of our members entered for the county championship events and our congratulations are extended to Messrs Lake and Tindle who did so well in reaching the semi-final stage of the pairs. The club took part in the C.I.C. competition and succeeded in winning it without losing a match. Unfortunately the number of clubs taking part was reduced to three, Langley Park finding it impossible to fulfil their fixture list. The club also took part in the newly formed N. W. Durham Bowls League, which consists of five clubs and again we were successful without losing a single match, thus having the honour of being the first holders of the Challenge Cup. As a concluding match we played against a side selected from the remainder of the league, and were again victorious.Friendly matches, home and away, were played against Darlington South Park, and against South Moor Wednesday, three of these being lost and the other abandoned owing to rain. The following table gives the list of “skips” who took part in the matches played in the C.I.C.  Competition, and the N. W. League:-ShotsP W L For AgstR. Wilson 12 11 1 291 193E. Tindle 11 10 1 181 159A. Mangles 11 9 2 294 169J. B. Richardson 11 8 3 158 174D. Davison 3 1 2 61 67 The following players were nominated for County matches:- Messrs E. Tindle, R. Wilson. J. W. Lake, J. Heatley, J.B. Richardson, and A. Mangles. The last named was selected and played in each of the three County matches, and  Mr Lake was selected and played against Northumberland. Our annual social and whist drive was held on the 25th March. and again proved to be very enjoyable.  The attendance of the members and the lady members of their families was the best we have had and it was agreed that the evening’s entertainment had maintained its usual high standard. The success of this function is due in a very large measure to the generosity of the officials and members of the club, who so kindly gave prizes for the whist and to whom we now express our most hearty thanks.Your committee has discussed the question of a club blazer and after careful consideration have agreed but the time has arrived when the club should adopt one. It has therefore been decided that the colour should be navy blue with gold cord binding and a monogram in gold on the breast pocket. We cannot conclude our report without expressing our thanks to the members generally for the support they have given the committee in these most trying times. Our club is now well established and if we all continue to show the same spirit of friendliness and co-operation in the future as in the past, we shall certainly be adding to the happiness and enjoyment of those we live with.

ANNUAL MEETING AND PRESENTATION OF PRIZES

The annual meeting of the above club took place at Blackhill last Friday night and was largely attended.

Coun. Ralph Alsop, who presided, said that it was his pleasing duty to propose the adoption of the annual report (a copy of which appeared in our last issue). All members had received a copy of the report, one or two points in which he wished to touch upon, and in the first place he would like to again congratulate them as a Bowling Club on the spirit which had been displayed during the past season. They started the club well, and developed during the first year just the right kind of spirit that was so necessary if a Bowling Club was to be a success. (Hear, hear.) Year by year that spirit had grown and during the past season they found the good feeling on the green fully appreciated by everyone. (Applause.) Another point he wished to allude to was the keen competition for the prizes offered, and he expressed his hearty congratulations to the winners, and was glad to see as club champion the name of their assistant secretary, Mr. Lake. (Applause.) There was a further point that he understood was not mentioned in the report and that was to congratulate Major Mangles on the number of games played. They had had more opportunities during the past year of using the greens than previously. It was very unfortunate that many of their members had not been employed, and if they had not had an opportunity of appreciating the game of bowls before, the past season had given them such an opportunity. He hoped that next year would find all fully employed, and that they would get still more enjoyment out of their games. He would conclude by trusting that next year they would have just as good a time as they had had last year, and he hoped that he would be able to spend more time with them. (Applause.)

BALANCE SHEET

Mr. Stockdale, the treasurer, in presenting the financial statement, said that they commenced the year with a balance of £29 16d 4d. The total income had been £79 19s 10d. After meeting liabilities there remained a balance of £24 12s 7d. However there were outstanding accounts totalling about £5 so that they really had a balance of some £19. (Applause.)

The chairman in moving the adoption of the report said that it was a matter for remark that they were in a worse position as regards the balance in hand than were at the beginning of the year. However, he thought that that was not a matter of great concern to them seeing that the balance was on the right side. He understood that there were still a few subscriptions to come in. Then there was the fact that during the past season there had been extra competitions, and he thought that all would agree that the money had been well spent. (Applause.) The financial statement showed that they were in a sound position. (Applause.)

Both reports were unanimously adopted.

ELECTION OF OFFICERS

Mr. E. J. George was elected president, and the Chairman said that he wished to take the opportunity of apologising for the absence of Mr. George, who had intended to come along but afterwards found that he had an important engagement in Newcastle.

Mr. Alsop was re-elected Chairman of the Management Committee and suitably expressed his thanks. Vice-presidents were re-elected “en bloc,” whilst Mr. Stockdale was re-appointed treasurer and thanks for his past services.

Major Mangles was again chosen as secretary, and the Chairman said that they were proud of the position that Major Mangles occupied in the bowling world, and especially in N. W. Durham (Applause.) Major Mangles expressed his acknowledgments.

Mr. J. W. Lake was re-elected as assistant secretary, and the Chairman said that he felt sure that he was expressing their feelings when he said that they were very grateful to Mr. Lake for the work he put in on behalf of the club, and also for the kindly and genial manner in which he carried out his duties (Applause.)

The Management Committee comprises:- nominated by Consett Iron Co. Messrs W. Firth, J. Mathieson, Moon and Macfadzean - by the members: Coun. W.D. Reed, Messrs M. Hobday, F. J. Simpson and G.T. Wilson; auditors Messrs J. Barrow and A. Simpson.

PRESENTATION OF PRIZES

The Chairman said that it was an unexpected pleasure to him to present the prizes to the winners. As he had said in his opening remarks, last season was the best season they had had in regard to the interest taken in the competitions. The interest had been so great and the competition so keen that he was knocked out of all competitions early on. (Laughter and applause.) However, he gave them warning that he intended to practise assiduously next season and hoped to do better. (Hear, hear.) Each competition had been contested with the upmost goodwill. It was a great pleasure to him, and to all associated with the greens that the competitions had been so well fought, and fought in such a friendly spirit. (Applause.) He hoped that they would have even more competitions, and that they would be as well fought and won as they had been that season. (Applause.)

The President’s trophy and replica went to Mr. J W. Lake; 2nd J. Wilkinson; 3rd and 4th divided between Major Mangles and Tindle.

The Rink Competition for the Chairman’s Cup was won by Messrs J. Turnbull J. W. Grant, P McCaughey, and W. Turnbull; 2nd Messrs T. Hodgson, W. Turnbull, T. Dent and D. Davidson.
