Fourth Annual Report
On 29th October 1926, The Consett Guardian printed the Club's fourth annual report, then on 5th November 1925 reported on the fourth annual meeting.
The committee decided there should be a club blazer, and that "the colour should be navy blue with gold cord binding and a monogram in gold on the breast pocket".
Transcriptions of both articles are below.
CONSETT PARK BOWLING
ANNUAL MEETING AND PRESENTATION OF PRIZES
The annual meeting of the above club took place at Blackhill last Friday night and was largely attended.
Coun. Ralph Alsop, who presided, said that it was his pleasing duty to propose the adoption of the annual report (a copy of which appeared in our last issue). All members had received a copy of the report, one or two points in which he wished to touch upon, and in the first place he would like to again congratulate them as a Bowling Club on the spirit which had been displayed during the past season. They started the club well, and developed during the first year just the right kind of spirit that was so necessary if a Bowling Club was to be a success. (Hear, hear.) Year by year that spirit had grown and during the past season they found the good feeling on the green fully appreciated by everyone. (Applause.) Another point he wished to allude to was the keen competition for the prizes offered, and he expressed his hearty congratulations to the winners, and was glad to see as club champion the name of their assistant secretary, Mr. Lake. (Applause.) There was a further point that he understood was not mentioned in the report and that was to congratulate Major Mangles on the number of games played. They had had more opportunities during the past year of using the greens than previously. It was very unfortunate that many of their members had not been employed, and if they had not had an opportunity of appreciating the game of bowls before, the past season had given them such an opportunity. He hoped that next year would find all fully employed, and that they would get still more enjoyment out of their games. He would conclude by trusting that next year they would have just as good a time as they had had last year, and he hoped that he would be able to spend more time with them. (Applause.)
BALANCE SHEET
Mr. Stockdale, the treasurer, in presenting the financial statement, said that they commenced the year with a balance of £29 16d 4d. The total income had been £79 19s 10d. After meeting liabilities there remained a balance of £24 12s 7d. However there were outstanding accounts totalling about £5 so that they really had a balance of some £19. (Applause.)
The chairman in moving the adoption of the report said that it was a matter for remark that they were in a worse position as regards the balance in hand than were at the beginning of the year. However, he thought that that was not a matter of great concern to them seeing that the balance was on the right side. He understood that there were still a few subscriptions to come in. Then there was the fact that during the past season there had been extra competitions, and he thought that all would agree that the money had been well spent. (Applause.) The financial statement showed that they were in a sound position. (Applause.)
Both reports were unanimously adopted.
ELECTION OF OFFICERS
Mr. E. J. George was elected president, and the Chairman said that he wished to take the opportunity of apologising for the absence of Mr. George, who had intended to come along but afterwards found that he had an important engagement in Newcastle.
Mr. Alsop was re-elected Chairman of the Management Committee and suitably expressed his thanks. Vice-presidents were re-elected “en bloc,” whilst Mr. Stockdale was re-appointed treasurer and thanks for his past services.
Major Mangles was again chosen as secretary, and the Chairman said that they were proud of the position that Major Mangles occupied in the bowling world, and especially in N. W. Durham (Applause.) Major Mangles expressed his acknowledgments.
Mr. J. W. Lake was re-elected as assistant secretary, and the Chairman said that he felt sure that he was expressing their feelings when he said that they were very grateful to Mr. Lake for the work he put in on behalf of the club, and also for the kindly and genial manner in which he carried out his duties (Applause.)
The Management Committee comprises:- nominated by Consett Iron Co. Messrs W. Firth, J. Mathieson, Moon and Macfadzean - by the members: Coun. W.D. Reed, Messrs M. Hobday, F. J. Simpson and G.T. Wilson; auditors Messrs J. Barrow and A. Simpson.
PRESENTATION OF PRIZES
The Chairman said that it was an unexpected pleasure to him to present the prizes to the winners. As he had said in his opening remarks, last season was the best season they had had in regard to the interest taken in the competitions. The interest had been so great and the competition so keen that he was knocked out of all competitions early on. (Laughter and applause.) However, he gave them warning that he intended to practise assiduously next season and hoped to do better. (Hear, hear.) Each competition had been contested with the upmost goodwill. It was a great pleasure to him, and to all associated with the greens that the competitions had been so well fought, and fought in such a friendly spirit. (Applause.) He hoped that they would have even more competitions, and that they would be as well fought and won as they had been that season. (Applause.)
