The Joys of Bowls

On 12th August 1927, the Consett Guardian published a letter and poem submitted by an anonymous reader, who called himself "One of the boys".

To help us celebrate the Club’s centenary, we are hoping you can write us a new poem! It can be about Consett Park Bowling Club, bowling in general, memories of a bowler, or Blackhill and Consett Park. It’s up to you, but the poem should mention bowls or bowling.

Please submit your poems to the Club by the end of July 2023. You can use the Contact Us page.

Poems may, at our discretion, be published as part of our centenary celebrations and thereafter, with appropriate attribution. You can remain anonymous, like the 1927 poet, if you wish.

It isn’t a competition, and there isn’t have a prize. We simply hope you enjoy writing a poem, or enjoy reading the poems that others have written.

Thank you.

CONSETT PARK.
THE JOYS OF BOWLS.(To the Editor.)Dear Sir,I would just like to say, as a native of Blackhill, how proud I feel to hear the remarks of many of the visitors with whom I have come in contact while paying a visit here. They all seem to be taken up with our park, the beautiful way it is kept, and also with the splendid bowling greens on which many of them have spent an enjoyable hour. I think we have something to be proud of at last, and that is the Consett Park, and I know of no better tonic to those who feel they are run down than an hour spent on the bowling greens.BOWLING ON THE GREEN.“You may sing the song of cricket and I grant you that the wicketIn allurement has of equals very few,That a sunny day’s well spent when the balls are flying sent,And you’re watching what the Champions can do.But when all is said and done, for cricket, rod, and gun,And in spite of all the football games we’ve seen,There is nothing can compare on an evening that is fairThan a jolly game of bowls upon the green. When your daily task is o’er, when existence seems a bore,Or sensations of the “blues” quite make you ill,Just get upon the green and ‘twill very soon be seenThat life had some attraction for you still. And when home you go at night, with your spirits gay and bright,Won your game, with several “touchers” in between; You’ll be feeling so light-hearted, fresher far than when you started,To have a game of bowls upon the green.
Then join us in the social game of bowling,‘Tis a sport which young and old may well enjoy. For though three score years you’ve seen, when you get upon the greenIt makes you feel as if you were a boy;For bowlers ne’er grow old - at least so we are told,And they always look so vigorous and keen. That because they play you see, every evening after tea.The jolly game of bowling on the green”--- Yours,“ONE OF THE BOYS.”
