Presentation to Major Mangles
On 6th November 1929 the Consett Guardian reported on a special meeting of the North-West Durham League
BOWLSNORTH-WEST DURHAM LEAGUEPRESENTATION TO MAJOR MANGLESAt a special meeting of the North-West Durham Bowls League held at Stanley, all the clubs being represented, Major Mangles was the recipient of a smoker’s cabinet, the design being a pair of bowls and a “jack.”Mr. J Pigg, Pelton, in making the presentation, said that North-West Durham bowlers would greatly miss the Major, and they deeply regretted his departure from the district, but he was glad that they were taking the opportunity of showing their appreciation of the active work of Major Mangles in organising and developing the game of bowls in North-West Durham. (Applause.) It was mainly through his efforts and his thorough knowledge of the game that the League came to be one of the best leagues in the county. He wished him prosperity in his new venture and he hoped he would visit them occasionally, and he was sure he would receive a warm welcome from all N. W. Durham bowlers. (Applause.)Major Mangles, replying, said he could hardly find words to express his feelings. he would like to have passed quickly out, but it was not to be. He thanked them heartily and said anything he had done was with a view to spread brotherly love and goodwill among his fellow-men, and he believed the game of bowls was responsible for making good friends, and helped to bring out all that was good in a man’s character. (Applause.) He wished the league continued success, and promised them he would visit them occasionally and enjoy a game with them. (Applause.)Mr. E. Tindle, the chairman, referred to the useful work of Major Mangles, and said that through his efforts the game was becoming very popular in North-West Durham. He was leaving them, but his good influence would remain. He asked the company to rise and join him in wishing Major Mangles good health and long life to enjoy his favourite game of bowls (Applause.)
