Damage in the Park

On Friday 11 July 1919 , The Consett Guardian reported on "great damage that had been caused in the park".  The matter was being discussed at a meeting of Consett Urban District Council.

DAMAGE IN THE PARK.A letter was read from the Consett Iron Co. respecting the great damage that had been caused in the park, and asking if the Council in conjunction with the Benfieldside U.D.C. would care to take the park over.Couns. Hayden and English warmly denounced the damage which had been committed in the park. The Chairman thought that the Council might consult with Benfieldside Council as to the taking over of the park. Probably the Consett Iron Company would be willing to make a substantial contribution to the upkeep.Coun. Hayden said that there could be no two opinions as to the objectionable manner in which the park had been used. He felt it would be a terrible loss if the community generally had not the use of the park, which had many advantages. He thought if they met the Benfieldside Council they might devise a scheme by which the park would be properly controlled.Coun. Daly: Do you think we can manage it better than the Consett Iron Company? I don’t think so. We could not get anyone better than the present manager. On the motion of Coun. Davidson the matter was referred to the Finance Committee.
