Spoons Competition and Match Against Spen

The first report is from the Consett Guardian dated July 27th 1923; it describes a successful spoons competition and previews a match against Spen. 

There was no secrecy about the selected team - it was available for the opposition to read ahead of the game. There were only a few minor changes made for the match.

SPOONS COMPETITIONIn connection with the Consett Park Bowling Club a most successful spoons competition was brought off last Saturday. A rink skippered by R.W. Wilson, and also including W. Lowe, H.H. Wattsford and J.E. Park were successful in winning the four silver spoons, which were afterwards presented in a graceful manner by Mrs Mangles, wife of Major Mangles, the popular Welfare Supervisor to the Consett Iron Company. Dr. J Murray presided over the proceedings. A large crowd witnessed the competition, the green being in good condition. It is proposed to hold a similar competition on Aug 1st, and entries will be received up to the time of the start.CONSETT PARK BOWLING CLUB v SPEN BOWLING CLUBThis match comes off in Consett Park tomorrow night (Thursday), commencing at 6 o'clock. Kirkup (skip.)Matches have also been arranged with Langley Park and Chopwell officials.

The second report is from the Consett Guardian date August 3rd 1923, and gives the result of the Spen match. Mr Marr, from Spen, expressed the hope that Consett Iron Company would have greens at all of their industrial centres, and that a league could be formed.

Total-57.At the conclusion of the game the two teams partook of refreshments, when Mr Park, on behalf of the home club, welcomed the visitors and congratulated them on their victory.In response Mr Marr, on behalf of the visiting club, expressed their thanks for the very enjoyable game and hospitality. The green was much better than their own and they had enjoyed their game very much. He went on to say that the game of bowls was increasing in popularity season by season, and he hoped the time was not far distant when the Consett Iron Co. would have greens at each of their industrial centres so that a Bowling League composed of C.I.C. clubs could be formed, and thus help to bring together those who are employed by the Company by means of this healthy exercise and recreation.
