CONSETT PARK BOWLING CLUBANNUAL MEETINGCLUB IN PROSPEROUS POSITIONThe annual meeting of the above club took place at Blackhill on Tuesday night. In the unavoidable absence of the President Mr. E. J. George and the Chairman of the Committee Mr R Alsop, Mr. W. D. Reed was voted to the Chair, and there was a good attendance. The Chairman expressed regret at the absence of the esteemed president and worthy chairman of committee. He said that all would have received a copy of the annual report of the Management Committee, which we give below:-FIFTH ANNUAL REPORTWe have pleasure in presenting to you the fifth annual report of the club. From the weather point of view this season has been very disappointing and our only consolation has been that occasionally we were favoured with fine weather but other places were virtually drowned out. The effect has been that we have never had during the season a really fast green to play on, but as the same, or even worse conditions prevailed all over the country, were to this extent consoled. It is difficult to keep bowling greens in condition, especially in a wet season, but players can do a great deal to assist in this by being careful in the way they deliver their woods when playing; not to throw them but to bowl them smoothly from the hand. Players are also reminded of the rule regarding the placing of the mat, and instead of always placing it near the ditch they should take advantage of the rule to place it where the jack lay at the finish of the head if that place be in the centre of the rink or if not, then in a line straight across to the centre. If this is practised it will assist in preserving the turf at the ends. Your committee wish to emphasise most strongly this question of the care of the greens, and hope  that all the members will assist, for it is in their own interests that everything should be done to keep the green in as good a condition as possible. In spite of the adverse conditions there can be no doubt that the steady improvement in play and the knowledge of the finer points of the game are maintained. This is forcibly impressed on your committee when selecting the players for the clubs matches for it is increasingly difficult to make the best selection. It is common knowledge, too, that as players improve in skill for desire to take part in the competitive matches becomes keener. In fact it often goes further and some are inclined to envy those who are chosen. Your committee will always endeavour to recognise talent and give it a chance. The season commenced on the 16th April when the greens were formally opened by our esteemed president Mr. E. J. George. The usual match was played between sites selected by the President and the Chairman, and afterwards the players and friends were entertained to tea by the kind invitation of the Consett Iron Company. The membership of the club is easily maintained at its limit viz. 200, and the waiting list of applicants is far greater but the number of vacancies which occur in a season. An important step was taken this season when it was decided to adopt club colours. After careful consideration navy blue blazers with gold cord binding and badge were chosen. Your committee hope that an increasing number of members will purchase them. The best thanks of the club are due to Mr. Macfadzean for the trouble he so kindly took in designing the badge. The programme of matches has been a heavy one. Fresh ground was broken in playing Carlisle Subscription one of the strongest Cumberland clubs. The outing was very enjoyable and it is hoped that it will be repeated. we were again successful in winning the N W. Durham League. Our congratulations are extended to Mr. J Page who won the gold medal for the league single-handed championship. The club championship was won by Mr J. Wilkinson. a player of much promise who defeated Mr P Hassall in the final. The pairs championship was won by Messrs. J. G. Chalmers and S. Page who well deserved their victory. The Rink Championship was carried off by Messrs A Reisbridge. W Mason. W. H. Lowe and W. Clarkson (skip). To all those mentioned we offer our hearty congratulations. The Spoons Competitions have again been most popular, and in response to the wishes of the majority of the players your committee has decided that the games should be 21 ends instead of 11 as formally. The jumbles competition continues to be popular and we congratulate the following prize winners who have played on consistently well throughout the season.1st Prize, Mr. E. The number who attend averages about 120 (60 members and 60 ladies). Those who have taken part in it know that it is very happy social gathering. The whist prize fund is generously supported by the officers and members of the club. The evening’s programme is varied and entertaining. The charge is only a nominal one and just enough to cover the expenses. Your committee hopes more members will take part in this popular social evening. In conclusion we would express our thanks to the members for their loyal support and assistance and so long as we all continue to do everything in our power to develop the existing feeling of good fellowship we can look forward with certainty to a very successful career for our club.On behalf of the Management Committee,A.
