April 1928

Opening of Greens

On 4th May 1928, the Consett Guardian reported on the opening of the greens the previous Saturday (28th April 1928).

As usual, the season started with a match between a team chosen by the President and a team chosen by the Chairman.  It was less usual for the match to take place in beautiful weather - the weather was more normally what was known as "Consett weather".

We are reviving this traditional start of season match as part of our Centenary celebrations.

Mr Ralph Alsop went on to become President of the Durham Bowling Association, then President of the England Bowling Association, and was awarded a CBE. We will be featuring Mr Alsop when we publish biographies of some of the important figures in the early days of the Club. Are you a descendant of Mr Alsop?  If so, we would love to hear from you, and perhaps we could work together to create a fitting tribute.

The President, Mr E. J. George, was General Manager of Consett Iron Company at the time. He received a knighthood in 1939.  As above, we would like to hear from anyone who can help us compile a biography.

B O W L S.------CONSETT PARK CLUB.OPENING OF GREENS.In beautiful weather the greens of the Consett Park Bowling Club were opened on Saturday by a match between teams selected by the president Mr E.J. George and the chairman of committee Mr. R. Alsop. The greens were in splendid condition and some keen play was witnessed. Afterwards the teams and several friends were entertained to tea by the Consett Iron Co. The match proved to be a most exciting one, Mr. Alsop’s side winning by the narrow margin of two shots.PRESIDENT’S TEAM
