The Consett Public Park

This report, from the Evening Chronicle, 22nd December 1887, describes the latest chapter in the saga of who manages the park

THE CONSETT PUBLIC PARKAt the monthly meeting, last night, of the Benfieldside Local Board, under the presidency of Mr. James Annandale, a letter was read from the Consett Iron Company, objecting to the division of the public park, as proposed by the Parks Committee and the Benfieldside Local Board, the Consett Local Board having, by the casting vote of the chairman, opposed the idea. The company pointed out that there seemed to be internal differences between the two Boards, they had better allow the company to again take possession of the ground. The Members denied that there were any differences existing between the two Boards, as the majority of the members of each body believed that the park could be more efficiently managed and worked by each Board talking sole control over its respective portion. The members also agreed that the company’s communication was written under some misapprehension, and, after a lengthened discussion, it was resolved to ask the company’s permission to adopt separate bye-laws for the management of the park.
