Bowling Green at Cricket Club ready for the new season
On 17th March 1899, The Consett Guardian reported on Consett and District Cricket Club's Annual Meeting. The extract below relates to the bowling green.
Bowling GreenThe chairman said that they would all be aware that the bowling green had not yet been played upon, owing to it not being in a fit condition. However, he was pleased to inform them that the bowling green was now in very good order, and would be ready for play as soon as the season commenced. As it was the only green in the district he trusted that not a few would patronise it.

The Cricket Club was also planning a smoking concert, reported in the same Consett Guardian article.
Smoking concerts were live performances, usually of music, before an audience of men only, popular during the Victorian era. These social occasions were instrumental in introducing new musical forms to the public. At these functions men would smoke and speak of politics while listening to live music. These popular gatherings were sometimes held at hotels. (Source: Wikipedia)
