On Friday 14th April 2023, we celebrate the opening of the green in our Centenary year.
Please wear your Club kit for this event. If you don't have a Club shirt yet, please wear white above the waist, and grey below.
The clubhouse will be open from 11:00, when activities will commence:
The President Opens the Green, bowling the first bowl.
You can read an account of the opening of the green in 1923, and in 1973 (50th anniversary year).
The photographs of the first bowl in 1923 and 1973 are also reproduced below.
All the players bowl at the same time, from the edge of the green to the jack in the centre, and the closest to the jack wins a prize.
A group photograph will be taken of all the club members present.
There will be a break for lunch at approximately 12:00, during which the teams will be selected for the afternoon's match.
The match will start at about 2:00pm.
If you would like to take part in this game, please add your name to the list on the notice board in the club house. All playing members are welcome to take part, including new members.
The President and the Chairman will each pick a team, who will then play the first match of the season. The teams will compete for the trophy donated by the president, Jim Ruddick, in 2022.
The selection process means the teams should be well-balanced and the game should be close. The winning team is the one that scores most shots across all the rinks. All playing members are encouraged to join; we can accommodate 48 players.
This match will re-create the tradition that started in the 1920s. You can read the Consett Guardian's report of the 1928 match on our website; it lists the players and the result. You can also read the 1927 report from the Newcastle Journal and North Star; it includes the result, but does not list the players.
Early winners of the competition
1924 President E. J. George
1925 Chairman R. Alsop
1926 President E. J. George
1927 President E. J. George
1928 Chairman R. Alsop
1929 Chairman R. Alsop
If you know the result in any other years please let us know.

We are delighted to welcome Darlington South Park to our club, and thank them for helping us to celebrate our centenary year. In keeping with tradition, there will be four rinks of four players, and 21 ends.
We established a strong relationship with Darlington South Park in the 1920s, when they visited us annually. This arose because of the Alsop brothers, one of whom played for Darlington and the other for Consett. You can read more about Ralph Alsop, our first chairman, on our website.
You can read the Consett Guardian reports of the matches played in 1927 and 1929 on our website.

Update 12/07/2023 8:38
Due to the predicted weather forecast for Sunday, which is high winds and heavy rain, County have agreed to cancel the below fixture. It will be re-arranged for early next outdoor season.
We will be playing five rinks of four players, and 21 ends.
Over the last 100 years there have been many matches between Consett Park Bowling Club and the County Association, known as Durham County & Yorkshire Bowling Association (formed 1922), Durham Bowling Association (from 1932), and Bowls Durham(from 2008).
In 1924, the Club's second season, a match against the Durham County and Yorkshire Bowling Association was arranged.
The Club's Second Annual Report stated:
"The County Association were good enough to offer to send four representative rinks to play our club on 31st May but unfortunately the weather was so bad on that day the game had to be cancelled. This was a great disappointment to our members but we look forward to the time when it will be possible to have such a match."
Spectators welcome.
The rinks will not be available for club use during the County competition.
